In the first six months of 2011, the Games Rating Board of the Korean Ministry has registered an increase of illegal online gambling games number, to 113.
This is the result of players’ interest in playing online games rather than video games.
The Korea Times has revealed the report about the illegal online games, pointing out that providers are facilitating online betting, making it possible for players to convert virtual points into real money through a complicated conversion process.
Through the transaction process, players use the winning virtual points to purchase items, which are addressed afterwards to online gambling operators, trading for cash, even though it is against the law.
Authorities find it very difficult to trace the defaulters as the entire transaction is completed online, making it very different than in real brick and mortar casinos.
According to the statement of a member of Games Rating Board, it is difficult to control online gambling on personal computers, therefore there is the need of a large number of trained people with high skills.
